A trip to Mourne Textiles

The Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland is not a landscape for the faint-hearted, imposing silhouettes - brutal yet breathtaking - snake along the horizon like a dragon’s back and have inspired stories and folklore, curiously capturing the imaginations of many for centuries.

We went on an expedition to Mourne Textiles to meet with Mario Sierra and his family. We have woven together our own collection, mapped out from a love of storytelling and a gentle slumber around an open fire or under the stars.

Mourne Textiles is a third generation family-run business and was founded in 1954 in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains, County Down. Still operating from the original studio, purpose-built by its founder, Norwegian textile designer, Gerd Hay-Edie. Remarkably, the internal layout of the mill remains unchanged, and many of the looms in use today have stood in the workshop for over five decades, giving the space a museum-like quality. Recent projects include partnerships with some of the most exciting names in modern design, including Margaret Howell, Carl Hansen, Pinch, and Twenty Twenty One, and now, the Jolene Bakery.

Thankfully for us, they know a lot about the weather in the Mournes - swirling wind, broody skies, eerie mists rolling in - and with the colder months on the horizon, we have collaborated to make the giant of blankets and two scarves, exclusively for Jolene.

Our Blanket is made of 100% wool, it is warm, huge in its wingspan and delivers endless hugs. The chunky weave is called Mended Tweed and is a captivating design and striking representation of mid-century design. The Tube Scarf and Scarf are both delicate blends of Merino wool, cashmere and silk, soft yet durable, they are set to become trusty old favourites, perfect partners for seasonal layering.
